3 tips to create stunning watercolour cakes

November 10, 2019

One of the latest trends in cakes design, is the ‘watercolour’ style.

But don’t worry, it’s not really made out of watercolour. You can still safely eat your cake without worrying about it tasting bad or being dangerous to your health.

There are two popular ways this is done.

One is by applying coloured frosting on top of a neutral coloured layer. You then use your cake scraper until it becomes a very thin layer, with a watercolour look to it.

Another method is by mixing rose spirits (alcohol specifically made for cake) with food colour. Using a clean brush, you can paint this on your cake just like an actual watercolour painting. This is the preferred option for more intricate designs that require more control.

Now here are 3 tips to create beautiful watercolour cakes

Tip #1. Add some bling

If you’re going through the effort of creating a watercolour effect, why not take it a step further and add some gold or silver?

Bright colours, contrasting against neutral frosting, and adding some gold or silver leaf on top can make your cake look super fancy.

Tip #2. Layer multiple colours

If you want a more developed colour, apply multiple layers on your cake. By layering these colours, some of the colours will incorporate together, while in areas that are more thinly applied will have a low opacity look that’ll show off the other layers of colour underneath.

Tip #3. Create different textures

This is another way to make your cake look a little fancier. Instead of just spreading the colour on as usual, you can use different materials to create textures on your cake.

One trick that creates a beautiful effect is to use a scrunched up paper towel and dab the colour on.

This creates a sponge painting type of look and can help you mix things up.

If you want to change textures, you can use a different material, or change how tightly you scrunch up the material before dabbing it on your cake.
