A beginner’s guide to your cake decorating tools

June 10, 2019

Anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings. We all know what the main star of the show is at every party (apart from the person we are celebrating!) The cake. If you want to create a show-stopping cake then you’ll need to know how to create some unique and fun decorations. This could be anything from food colouring and piping to fondant and icing.

But what if your cake decorating experience isn’t quite up to that standard? Don’t panic! This guide will take you through what you need to know about cake decorating tools to help you create a fantastic cake for every occasion.

Cake tin: An eight or nine-inch tin is always a good starting place

Turntable: This makes it easy for you to spin cakes and smooth out any borders or icing edges

Fondant rollers: A large fondant roller is used to smooth out cake decorations and a small fondant roller is used to roll out what is covering the cake

Fondant smoother: This will create an extra smooth effect on your cake layers

Cake boards: These are typically made of cardboard and come in a variety of sizes and colours. They can handle lighter cakes and are disposable. For heavy cakes, more cake boards will be necessary.

Piping tips: A starter kit will come with an assortment of sizes and shapes. When you find your favourites, you can focus on creating variations on that style. Popular tips include: round, star, closed star, petal, leaf, and drop flowers.

Piping bags: You can find both disposable and reusable. You should use 16-inch ones for different types of icing.

Serrated knife: To cut cakes you want a thin knife that has scalloped edges to create a cleaner cut.

Food dye: These come in a variety of forms and colours including gel, liquid and powder. Different types will produce different strengths of colour.

Pastry brush: This will be used to brush on butter, flakes or even preserves on decorative fruit.

Offset spatula: You use this to spread frosting on the cake. The metal blade at the end doesn’t cut through a cake and you can get them in a variety of sizes.
